Stemming from the Hebrew word for “bitter,” maror refers to the bitter herbs eaten during a Passover seder.
During the seder, participants must eat bitter herbs — a commandment that comes from the Torah. We eat the herbs to remind us of the bitter lives Israelites faced in ancient Egypt.
As one of the core symbols of Passover, maror is included on the Passover seder plate.
