The Garlic Eaters: A Universal Story

August 21, 2025

When a garlic-loving, Yiddish-speaking family is forced out of their garlic-bulb house, they must search for a new place, and a new community, to call home.

In the new book by Madison Safer coming in Spring 2026 from Somewhere Books, a sibling imprint of Ayin Press, the Garlic Eaters live underground in a cozy house made entirely out of garlic. They love how the plant smells and tastes; they even wear garlic peels and sleep on garlic cloves. Then one day, a very large mole storms through their beloved home, forcing them to leave. And so begins the family’s journey to find a new place to live—and a community that will embrace them, and their favorite food, just the way they are.

Full of heart, whimsy, and Yiddish vocabulary, The Garlic Eaters introduces young readers to a universal story: being exiled and alienated because of one’s identity, starting over somewhere else, and the repair that can be found in community and care.
