The Anne Frank Gift Shop: Companion Lesson Plan

May 30, 2025

About the Film

The Anne Frank Gift Shop was shortlisted for the 2024 Academy Award for Best Live Action Short. The film is a dark comedy that imagines a meeting between two representatives of the Anne Frank House and the New York design firm they’ve hired to help them renovate the gift shop to appeal to young people. But the company’s overt appeals to Generation Z spark a debate about collective trauma, the Holocaust and tote bags. The film stars Chris Perfetti (“Abbott Elementary”), Ari Graynor (Netflix’s “Monsters”) and the comedian Mary Beth Barone and was written and directed by Mickey Rapkin, whose book “Pitch Perfect” inspired the film series.

About the Lesson Plan

The Anne Frank Gift Shop companion lesson plan is a guided educational tool for teachers, group leaders, and individuals looking to engage further with the themes of the film. Through private reflection, group discussion, and a creative exercise, students will be introduced to the basics of brand identity and marketing as they relate to the central question of the film: How can we use these tools to reach young people, build empathy, and preserve the legacy of the Holocaust?

The lesson plan is designed to take 1-3 class periods with a short take home assignment in between, educators may adjust the length to fit their curriculum. This lesson plan is designed to accompany High School Holocaust Education, and is most suitable for students over the age of 12.
