Identity and Its Discontents: Wrestling with Self at Center Stage

Episode 1 of the Reboot Ideas series “In Process: Artist talkbacks with Rabbi and Theatre Artist Kendell Pinkney”

The program was held following the July 12 performance of Out of Character at Berkeley Rep and a recording will be  made available for streaming shortly.

Hosted by Reboot in partnership with Berkeley Rep and The Workshop with support from the Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund.

Reboot Rabbinical Educator Kendell Pinkney sat down with his friend and colleague, Tony-winning actor Ari’el Stachel to discuss the “intersections of race, mental health, and survival” from the stage of Stachel’s new show at Berkeley Rep, Out of Character. The show follows Stachel’s story of growing up in Berkeley as an Israeli American of Yemeni Jewish descent and his quest to navigate his Middle Eastern identity in a progressively daunting post-9/11 America.

This conversation is the second in a 2023 Reboot Ideas series of three events in the San Francisco Bay Area, supported by the Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund. The series, “Art as Counterpoint to Antisemitism,” foregrounds the role of arts and culture as acts of resistance to a rising tide of antisemitism.
