Cult Classic: A Conversation with Sloane Crosley and Andrew Goldberg

The conversation was held in Person at The Wyman Bar at Neuehouse Bradbury in Downtown Los Angeles June 29. The recording will be available here shortly.

Sloane Crosley’s fifth book and second novel, Cult Classic, is a mysterious comedy, bringing metaphysics, modern love and mind control to New York City’s Lower East Side.

Andrew Goldberg is a writer, producer and co-creator of Netflix’s Big Mouth, which teems with hormone monsters, pre-teen angst, and Bat Mitzvah drama.

These two writers (who graduated high school together) can trace their origins to the suburbs of New York and many of their stories to their suburban Jewish upbringings. They joined Reboot Ideas for a discussion of comedy, cultural irreverence and the ways in which personal identity creeps into public art.

SLOANE CROSLEY is the author of The New York Times bestselling essay collections, I Was Told There’d Be Cake (a 2009 finalist for The Thurber Prize for American Humor) and How Did You Get This Number, as well as Look Alive Out There (a 2019 finalist for The Thurber Prize for American Humor) and the bestselling novel, The Clasp. She served as editor of The Best American Travel Writing series and is featured in The Library of America’s 50 Funniest American Writers, The Best American Nonrequired Reading, Phillip Lopate’s The Contemporary American Essay and others. She was the inaugural columnist for The New York Times Op-Ed “Townies” series, a contributing editor at Interview Magazine, and a columnist for The Village Voice, Vanity Fair, The Independent, Black Book, Departures and The New York Observer. She is a contributing editor at Vanity Fair. She lives in New York City.

Andrew Goldberg is Co-Creator, Executive Producer, and Showrunner of Netflix’s hit adult-animated comedy Big Mouth. The series, about the glorious nightmare that is teenage puberty and inspired by his childhood with comedian Nick Kroll, premiered its fifth season in November 2021. In 2021, the show also received its third consecutive Emmy nomination for Outstanding Animated Program. BIG MOUTH stars Nick Kroll, John Mulaney, Fred Armisen, Jordan Peele, and Maya Rudolph.
