Ctrl Alt Del: Tashlique 2024 at Crissy Field East Beach

Join us for our annual modern spin on tashlich at Crissy Field East Beach. Mark the start of your Jewish New Year with a free event by Reboot and the JCCSF

Thursday, October 3, 2024, 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.

Reboot’s Tashlique was the brainchild of Laurie Blavin who passed this year. What it has grown into is a testament to her creativity, community, and love. May her memory be for a blessing.

Mark the start of your new year with Reboot and the JCCSF. Reset your system with our modern spin on a 600-year-old Rosh Hashanah ritual called tashlich. This custom of ridding ourselves of all our bad vuggum (karma) from the previous year and getting a fresh start for the new one is traditionally enacted by tossing crumbs (we now use birdseed to be more eco-conscious) into the ocean. Join us 5 p.m.- 7 p.m., Thursday, October 3, 2024, by the shore at Crissy Field East Beach for a brief, engaging ritual. Bring a shofar, if you have one, to blow along with some of San Francisco’s finest players from the Jazz Mafia, the Irish Pipers Band, and the Ministers of Sound of the Saint John Will-I-Am Coltrane African Orthodox Church. Since 2007, 10Q has provided a platform for thousands of people to reflect deeply in a digital space, and has branched out into live 10Q Pop Up experiences, as well as writing-journals for families and adults. Utilizing themes surrounding Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the project offers a deeply connected experience in a way that’s natural to digital natives. After being featured in the early years on the Times Square Jumbotron and embraced by celebrities such as Jane Lynch (Glee) and Joey Soloway (Transparent), the project has gone on to privately chart the journeys and narratives of our participants’ lives.

Marking the High Holidays: Forgiveness

From poet and Blavity co-founder, Aaron Samuels, Forgiveness interrogates the Jewish community’s collective atonement journey, grappling with the pandemic of COVID-19 and the pandemic of racism, which were intertwined and hyper-present in the years 5780 and 5781. Samuels’ Forgiveness explores the transitional spiritual space that we enter on Kol Nidre, during which we reckon with our shortcomings and enter a period of repair and reconciliation.

Tashlich: Casting off and Building Community

Every year, I spend Tashlich at the beach basking in the sounds of jazz, bag pipers and horns – in addition to the Shofar. It’s a tradition that I started with friends years ago when I truly needed community. And this year, after spending so much time apart, we all need community more than ever. This unique tradition, now shared with Reboot and the JCCSF and drawing crowds of hundreds, began in the spring of 1996.
