Tashlique Wrap Up: A Welcome Return to the Ritual
After over a year of virtual gatherings and socially distanced greetings, more than 600 people masked up and made their way to Ocean Beach in San Francisco for the annual “Tashlique” event hosted by Reboot and the JCCSF.
The joy in the air was palpable as families and friends exchanged long overdue hugs and children played together in the sand. Luther Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars played guitar as people arrived, providing the score for the sweet reunions. After welcomes from Reboot CEO David Katznelson and prayers and reflection from Rabbi Batshir Toricho, musicians from The Church of John Coltrane, The Jazz Mafia, and The Irish Pipers (yes – bagpipes!) erupted in music. “When the Saints Go Marching In” could be heard across the beach as more than 600 people made their way to the water to scatter birdseed and reflect on the year that was coming to a close.
And as we all walked to the shore, the sun broke through the clouds and shone sweet golden hour on the face and the souls of the revelers.
While the traditional post-Tashlique bonfire and s’mores did not take place this year for COVID safety, everyone received small bags of s’mores trail mix on their way out to close the evening with a sweet treat for a sweet new year.
