REXODUS: Out of the Closet, Into the Tribe

Acclaimed Los Angeles-based transmasculine performer and comedian Marval Rex will tell the uproarious, raw, and deeply personal story of his dual journeys in transitioning from a Catholic schoolgirl to an unapologetically proud transmasculine Jewish man in a new one-man comedic performance REXODUS: Out of the Closet, Into the Tribe at the Elysian Theatre October 16 and 25, 2024.

Raised in Mormon-dominated Utah, Rex has been breaking free from constraints—societal and spiritual – his entire life. A hybrid of stand-up comedy, personal storytelling, and interactive performance art, REXODUS: Out of the Closet, Into the Tribe is an invitation to challenge societal norms, laugh at life’s absurdities, and embrace the freedom that comes with self-discovery. Whether you’re trans, Jewish, or simply an outsider in your own story, Rex’s performance will resonate deeply with anyone who’s ever questioned their place in the world. Through humor, discomfort, and honesty, Rex urges us to embrace our complexities and contradictions as a human species, all while laughing through the sacred messiness of our lives.

Rex’s journey mirrors the ancient story of the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt, but his version is filled with humor, sharp commentary, and jaw-dropping revelations, including the unexpected discovery of his Jewish heritage through Mormon genealogical records. Through a mix of irreverent comedy and heart, Rex delves into the intersections of gender, faith, and identity with the wit of a seasoned comedian and the storytelling depth of a performance artist. Produced by Reboot Studios and directed by Diana Wyenn, this raw, uproarious show is a testament to resilience and the power of self-liberation.

REXODUS is produced by Reboot Studios on the heels of its recent successes, including theatrical hit and MAX comedy special Just for Us by Alex Edelman, and Oscar-shortlisted dark comedy The Anne Frank Gift Shop. Reboot Studios empowers artists, storytellers and innovators to transform society with inspirational and provocative new Jewish content by supporting and developing projects for television, film, stage, podcasts, music, publishing and beyond.
